(Lytle Street West of 27th Street) Colonel Charles Young was born March 12, 1864, in Mayslick, Kentucky. He was the third African American to graduate for West Point in 1889. Col. Young was the first African American Park Ranger (1903), first African American Military Advisor (1904), Professor of Military Science (1894), and the first African American Colonel (1917). Col. Young was the recipient of the NAACP SPINGARD MEDAL
(1916). He died on January 8, 1922.
